Are Dragon Ball covers the same in Japanese and English?

The core Toriyama artwork is usually the same, but English editions change the logo, spine design, trim, and, most confusingly, the numbering, because Viz split the manga into Dragon Ball (volumes 1 to 16) and Dragon Ball Z (volumes 17 to 42 in Japanese counting).

Start with the split. Japan published one manga, Dragon Ball, in 42 tankobon. Viz, following the anime's branding, sold the first 16 volumes as Dragon Ball and renumbered the remaining 26 as Dragon Ball Z volumes 1 to 26. A buyer comparing a Japanese volume 30 with an English volume 30 is comparing different books, and this single fact causes more wrong purchases than any cover difference.

Where the same Toriyama illustration appears, the presentation differs. Japanese tankobon carry the red Dragon Ball logo, author name, and volume number in a consistent spine system designed to shelve as a rainbow of spines. Viz editions replace the logo with English trade dress, alter spine colors by printing, and in the earliest printings used a larger trim that makes the same art crop differently at the edges.

The kanzenban complicates the comparison in the other direction: its 34 covers are entirely new Toriyama art never used on standard English editions, so a kanzenban cover has no English counterpart at all. The Full Color and Super editions, by contrast, mostly share covers between languages, with Super's English volumes tracking the Japanese closely.

For a collector building a JP beside EN display, the honest pairings are tankobon to Viz standard volumes, accepting the numbering offset, or Super volumes one to one. The Library's edition pages give the volume mapping, and the first-printing page explains why the same cover can hide very different books inside.
