SOJ Saint Seiya · Japanese vs English
← Back to the Library

Are the Saint Seiya covers the same in Japanese and English?

No, and it is not close: the English books wear a different cover program entirely.

Plenty of manga keep their Japanese covers in translation. Saint Seiya does not. Viz Media’s Knights of the Zodiac (28 volumes, January 21, 2004 to February 2, 2010) re-dresses every book: a new logo in English lettering, a coloured banner and volume numeral, and different illustrations from the Jump Comics originals. The interiors are Kurumada’s manga; the faces the books show the world are not the faces Japan saw.

VOLUME 1, SIDE BY SIDE

1986 against 2004

The debut, twice

Different art · different logo · same first chapters
Saint Seiya volume 1 Japanese cover
Jump Comics · 1986Seiya shouting inside a swirl of green, the hand-drawn series logo below.
Knights of the Zodiac volume 1 Viz cover
Viz Media · 2004Seiya in the full Pegasus Cloth over a green starburst, “Knights of the Zodiac” in chrome lettering, the numeral worn like a badge.

Both covers are Kurumada’s world, but they are not the same painting, the same composition, or the same design language. Japan got the artist’s cover; America got a poster.

VOLUME 28, SIDE BY SIDE

The last book, twice

The finale, twice

1991 against 2010
Saint Seiya volume 28 Japanese cover
Jump Comics · 1991A golden crowd scene: the whole cast massed for the end of the Hades war.
Knights of the Zodiac volume 28 Viz cover
Viz Media · 2010Seiya alone in the God Cloth, quiet and bright, the series ending on a portrait instead of a crowd.

The pattern holds to the last book: where the Japanese cover is a mural, the English cover is a pin-up. Neither is a reprint of the other at any point in the run.

WHAT IT MEANS FOR A SHELF

Collecting both
Two cover sets, one manga
A complete Saint Seiya cover collection in these two languages means 56 books, not 28: the full Jump Comics program and the full Viz program, neither substituting for the other.
Why Viz redesigned
The 2003–04 American anime push sold the series as Knights of the Zodiac, a name inherited from the French hit. The manga’s trade dress follows that branding, chrome logo and all. The France page of this archive tells that story.
