The City Hunter Manga Gallery

Thirty-five volumes, six years, one unmistakable silhouette.

This is the paper shelf: every Jump Comics volume of City Hunter, in order, with the bibliographic record for each book, the volume title, release month and ISBN, verified against the standard published catalogue of the run. Tsukasa Hojo drew every cover; the run moved at a book roughly every two months for six years.

One honest note before the shelf. Volume 1’s cover is pictured and verified. For volumes 2 to 35, no cover image could be verified from an opened source in this pass: the publisher and retail archives that carry cover art for so many series simply do not carry it for the 1986 to 1992 Jump Comics printings. So the page documents those volumes in full rather than borrowing an image it cannot stand behind. The gap is logged, and the covers will join their entries as sources allow.

City Hunter volume 1, Jump Comics

Volume 1: the door into Shinjuku

Ryo Saeba and Kaori Makimura on the first book’s cover, January 1986: the sweeper with his Colt Python, and the partner who polices him with a 100-ton hammer. Hojo’s realism, faces drawn like film stars rather than cartoon types, is there from the first volume.

The book gathers the opening stories, beginning with the episode the anime would later name a film after: “Angel Dust”. The magazine run had opened the previous February; everything the franchise became is already present in these pages.

Reading the run

The cadence
Two months a book
Thirty-five volumes in seventy-five months. Jump Comics printed City Hunter like a newsstand staple, and the market rewarded it: the series passed 50 million copies in circulation.
The ISBN tells
Three numbering blocks
Shueisha’s own numbering maps the years. Volumes 1 to 20 run 852381 to 852400 (1986 to 1989); 21 to 29 jump to 852612 to 852620 (1989 to 1990); the final six sit in a third block, 852191 to 852196 (1991 to 1992). A spine number dates a copy before you open it.
The finale
Forever, City Hunter!!
The magazine run ended in issue 50 of 1991; the last book followed on April 15, 1992, titled Forever, City Hunter!! The 35 volumes group the serial into 191 collected episodes, closing with the episode of the same name.
