Diablo novels in order: where to start
New readers ask two questions: where do I start, and does order matter. For Diablo the forgiving answer is that the novels are largely standalone stories set across Sanctuary history, so publication order is a safe and satisfying path. That path begins with Demonsbane by Robert B. Marks, the 2000 e-novella recorded at 9780743418997, which had no standalone print edition and is easiest found inside the Diablo Archive omnibus, 9781416576990.
The classic Pocket Books run follows: Legacy of Blood by Richard A. Knaak, first edition 9780671041557 and Blizzard Legends reissue 9781945683015; The Black Road by Mel Odom, 9780743426916 with reissue 9781945683121; The Kingdom of Shadow by Knaak, 9780743426923 with reissue 9781945683169; and Moon of the Spider, whose verified reissue is 9781956916171. All four early novels are also collected in the Diablo Archive.
The Sin War trilogy is the one sequence that should be read in its own order, because it tells a single three book story set thousands of years before the games: Birthright, 9780743471220, then Scales of the Serpent, then The Veiled Prophet, 9780743471244. Blizzard Legends reissues exist for all three, at 9781945683473, 9781945683596 and 9781950366125 respectively, and a Sin War Archive omnibus was published by Gallery Books in 2011 as 9781451674002.
For the Diablo III era, read Nate Kenyon in publication order: The Order, hardcover 9781416550785 and paperback 9781451645651, then Storm of Light, 9781416550808. The Diablo IV era begins with The Lost Horadrim by Matthew J. Kirby, hardcover 9780425284896, published April 21, 2026 as the official prequel to Lord of Hatred. Short fiction can be read at any point: Tales from the Horadric Library, US edition 9781950366798, is the strongest of the collections.
The collector angle is simple. First printings carry the Pocket Books and Gallery Books ISBNs above; the Blizzard Legends reissues carry the 978194568 and 978195 ISBNs. Neither is wrong to own, but they are different objects, and listings frequently mix them up, so check the ISBN on the listing against this page before buying.
