Dragon Ball FighterZ explained

FighterZ is the 2018 three-on-three fighting game by Arc System Works that renders 3D models to imitate the anime's 2D art frame by frame, became the franchise's flagship competitive title, and is routinely ranked among the best licensed fighting games ever made.

Arc System Works built FighterZ on the technique it refined in Guilty Gear Xrd: fully 3D characters posed, lit, and camera-framed to reproduce hand-drawn animation, down to replicating the anime's limited frame rates on hits. The result is the first Dragon Ball game that, in stills, is routinely mistaken for the television series, a quality that made its trailers detonate at E3 2017 and that still defines its shelf appeal, since its cover and steelbook art draw directly from that look.

The structure honors both audiences. Three-character teams with assists invite the Marvel vs Capcom comparison its developers welcomed, dramatic finishes recreate manga panels when specific matchups end specific ways, and the story mode introduces Android 21, a new character designed by Toriyama whose design sheets and tragic arc made her a lasting addition, later playable and eventually central enough to appear in the Super Hero era's backstory.

Competitively, FighterZ headlined major tournaments for years, its 2018 Evo final is a canonical fighting game broadcast, and its rollback netcode update in later years extended its life well past the usual licensed-game span. For the franchise, it proved a Dragon Ball game could lead the genre rather than borrow from it.

Physical editions are plentiful across PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and later PlayStation 5, with a CollectorZ edition carrying a Goku statue as the display piece. The Switch port is the version collectors ask about most: a faithful conversion whose cartridge release makes it the modern Dragon Ball game most often bought twice, once to play and once to shelve.
