Dragon Ball Super: anime vs manga differences

The anime (2015 to 2018, 131 episodes) and Toyotarou's manga share Toriyama's outlines but differ throughout: the manga streamlines and re-choreographs, the anime expands with original episodes, and several forms and fight outcomes exist in only one version.

The root difference is production. The anime was the lead product, made weekly by Toei under deadline pressure that showed in early episodes, while the monthly manga could plan spreads and pacing with hindsight. Toriyama's outlines were brief, sometimes a page of beats per arc, leaving each production to invent connective tissue, which is why blaming either version for a divergence usually misreads how both were made.

Concrete differences accumulate fast. The manga largely skips Resurrection F. Super Saiyan Blue's stamina problem is solved differently: the manga's completed Blue form has no anime equivalent in use, while the anime invented Blue Kaioken and the evolved Blue used by Vegeta in the tournament. The Goku Black arc ends with different mechanics in each version, and the Tournament of Power eliminates fighters in different orders with different showcases, including a manga version of Kale and a very different role for Gohan.

After the anime ended, the comparison ends too: Moro and Granolah are manga-only arcs, and the manga's Super Hero retelling adds scenes the film lacks. A complete Super shelf therefore needs both versions in a way Z never demanded, since Z's manga is simply the source and its anime the adaptation.

For buyers the practical map is simple. The anime is collected in seasonal Blu-ray sets in the West and is the version with Kikuchi's successor score by Norihito Sumitomo and the famous Episode 109 to 110 special. The manga is 20-plus slim tankobon and counting in Japanese counting at the time of writing, cheap to shelve, and the only route to the post-tournament story. Neither replaces the other, which is precisely Super's collecting identity.
