Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero explained

It is the 2022 film in which the rebuilt Red Ribbon Army creates the androids Gamma 1 and Gamma 2 and the unfinished monster Cell Max, and Piccolo and Gohan reach new forms, Orange Piccolo and Gohan Beast, in a story told almost entirely from Piccolo's side.

Super Hero is structurally a sequel to the manga's earliest era: the Red Ribbon Army, destroyed by a child Goku, returns under Commander Red's grandson Magenta and the scientist Dr. Hedo, Gero's grandson, who builds superhero-styled androids because he genuinely believes the Capsule Corporation side are villains. The Gammas' tokusatsu posing and Hedo's fanboy sincerity make the film the funniest modern Dragon Ball entry, until Cell Max, activated early and mindless, turns it into a disaster film.

Toriyama wrote the film as a Piccolo story, by his account because Piccolo was his favorite character, and it shows: Goku and Vegeta appear mostly in a comic subplot on Beerus's planet. The new forms are seeded through Piccolo for once, a potential-unleashed wish on Shenron, before Gohan's Beast transformation in the climax, drawn as a deliberate echo of his Cell Games awakening with silver hair and red eyes.

The production is the franchise's first fully 3D CG feature, modeled to imitate the 2D look, a choice that split audiences on release. Its grosses were strong but below Broly's, which industry coverage attributed partly to the CG style and partly to its quieter, character-led marketing. The Super manga later retold the film across many chapters with added material, including a Goten and Trunks prologue, making the manga version the expanded edition of the story.

For the shelf, Super Hero's identity is its tie-in breadth: the manga retelling volumes, Gamma figure lines that sold on design alone, and Japanese home editions whose extras document the CG pipeline. It is also the last Dragon Ball film released in Toriyama's lifetime, which has given its first-release Japanese editions a memorial weight in the market.
