Famitsu and the Japanese Harvest Moon guidebook record
A Bokujo Monogatari game is a spreadsheet wearing a straw hat: crop prices by season, villagers' schedules by hour, gift reactions by character, festival dates, heart events, mine depths. Japanese publishers built books to match. Enterbrain, the house of Famitsu magazine, was the central guide publisher for the series' core era, issuing official and complete guides for the N64, PS1 and GBA games, joined across the years by other Japanese publishers' volumes. Multiple guides per title was normal: a launch guide for the systems, a complete guide for the secrets.
Harvest Moon 64 is the showcase case. Bokujo Monogatari 2 received thorough Japanese guide coverage, including Famitsu line volumes that mapped Flower Bud Village, charted every villager's affections and printed the event conditions the game itself never states. None of it was published in English. The American player of 1999 farmed with a thin manual and magazine tips, which is a real part of why the Japanese books are collectible now: they are the documentation the game always deserved, in its first language.
The pattern held across the core era. Back to Nature and its girl version, Friends of Mineral Town in both versions, A Wonderful Life and Magical Melody all received Japanese guides, often several, with farm layout diagrams, recipe lists, animal care tables and character art sections that make them good reading as series art books. Character popularity polls and developer comments appear in the Famitsu orbit books, giving them a documentary value beyond strategy: they record what the Japanese audience loved about Mineral Town while it was new.
Buying them is a completeness discipline of its own. Check for the obi strip, expect working wear on popular volumes, and match the guide to the exact version, because boy and girl versions often have separate books. Prices stay reasonable because print runs were large. A shelf pairing each core game with its Japanese complete guide is the single most achievable prestige set in this section, and the Harvest Moon 64 guides are where to start.
