What is Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise?
What happens when the Yakuza team is handed the other great Japanese saga of stoic men exploding each other with their fists.
Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise, Hokuto ga Gotoku in Japan, launched there on March 8, 2018 and worldwide on October 2, 2018. It is RGG Studio's house formula applied to Buronson and Tetsuo Hara's post-apocalyptic manga: Kenshiro arrives in the walled city of Eden searching for Yuria, and Eden is Kamurocho rebuilt, a nightlife city of bars, bounties, minigames and substories in the wasteland. Its reported sales, 123,116 copies in its early Japanese window, were modest, but its existence says everything about the studio's confidence in its template.
THE CROSSOVER MECHANICS
One template, two sagasPressure points as combat
Kenshiro's Hokuto Shinken, killing by striking pressure points, becomes a finisher system of channeling and QTE detonations, the brawler grammar translated, not just reskinned.
The host club joke
In the crossover's most famous swerve, Kenshiro can work as a bartender and manage Eden's nightclub: the studio's management-sim instincts applied to the most solemn hero in manga.
A secret passenger
The game's trailer campaign also hid the series' future: Ichiban Kasuga's face appeared in its promotional material a year before his own debut, a cameo for a hero who is not in the game at all.
