How are Ghibli films released on disc in Japan?

In Japan the films moved from LaserDisc and VHS prestige editions to a uniform DVD library line, then to Blu-ray editions and director collections whose masters supplied most international releases.

Japanese Ghibli discs set the reference standard for the catalogue, as Japanese discs do for most anime of this stature. The prestige era was LaserDisc and VHS in the late 1980s and 1990s, when the films were issued in large format sleeves that treated the poster art at full size. Those editions are now display objects, and complete, clean runs of the LaserDisc line remain the physical high end of Ghibli collecting.

The DVD era standardised the catalogue. From 2001 the films appeared in a uniform Japanese DVD library line with consistent spine and cover design, the shelf most Japanese households actually built, accompanied by the Ghibli documentary and supplementary discs the studio has always favoured. Uniformity was the product: one design system, every film, no gaps, a publishing idea borrowed from book series rather than from the film business.

Blu-ray repeated the pattern at higher quality. Individual film Blu-rays in Japan use the well known silhouette design, a coloured ground with the film's emblem, and the Miyazaki directed features were gathered into a collected box that became an export benchmark, since the Japanese masters underlie most overseas editions. Takahata's features received parallel collected treatment, keeping the two founders' lines distinct even inside one studio's catalogue.

Identification for buyers: Japanese Ghibli discs carry catalogue numbers and publisher information for Buena Vista's former Japanese operation and its successors, region and audio details differ from Western discs, and Japanese editions typically include Japanese audio with Japanese subtitles rather than English options, with notable exceptions by title and era. A listing that does not show the back cover has withheld the page that settles every one of those questions.
