How big was THE FIRST SLAM DUNK across Asia?

In China and South Korea the film played like a reunion for a generation that had grown up on pirated tapes and late-night reruns.

Slam Dunk never really left Asia. The 1990s anime and manga circulated enormously in China, South Korea, Taiwan and Southeast Asia, so when the film opened across the region in 2023 it was received less as a new release than as a class reunion.

China gave the clearest numbers: the film set presale records for an animated film there and opened to crowds who treated Sakuragi's generation as their own school memory. South Korea, where the manga has been a fixture for decades, likewise turned the release into a phenomenon of repeat attendance, themed screenings and merchandise that sold out in hours. Worldwide earnings of about $279 million were built substantially on these markets rather than on North America, where GKIDS released the film in July 2023 to a modest $662,211 opening weekend.

For collectors the Asian editions matter: Chinese and Korean printings, theater goods and regional Blu-ray releases form a parallel shelf that Japanese-focused writing rarely documents.
