How can you read Vampire Hunter D in English?
One translator, twenty years, two formats, and a numbering system that will trick you if you let it.
English readers waited twenty-two years. The first official translation, from DH Press and Digital Manga Publishing, translated by Kevin Leahy, arrived on 11 May 2005, and Leahy stayed the series' translator for the entire run that followed. (The very first D in English had actually appeared in 1997, Leahy's translation of the story Portrait of Yzobel, tucked inside the Japanese edition of the Coffin art book.)
Print moved to Dark Horse Books after 2014, with Kindle editions running since 2012. Publication reached Gold Fiend in July 2024, which closed out Leahy's Dark Horse contract; as of January 2025 no continuation was firmly planned, though Leahy has committed to finishing the series one way or another.
THE NUMBERING TRAP
Read this before you buyParts count as volumes
English numbering counts every split part of a multi-part novel as its own volume, so the English numbers run ahead of the Japanese novel numbers. By 2020: 29 English volumes, 24 novels.
Dark Nocturne is volume 10
The anthology slots into the English sequence as volume 10, between the North Sea and Rose Princess material. It is not novel ten in Japan, where it has no number at all.
Two covers for the price of one
Where an English volume compiles a multi-part novel into a single book, the second part's Japanese cover appears inside as a colour frontispiece. Amano's art survives the repackaging.

The Reader's Guide in English
Dark Horse's 2010 English Reader's Guide expands the glossary to nearly two hundred pages. For lore questions, it is the deepest English object in the franchise.
