How can you tell a first pressing of a Cowboy Bebop soundtrack?

Verify the Victor catalog number and obi, check the booklet printing quality, and compare the disc matrix against documented Japanese pressings before paying.

Cowboy Bebop soundtracks were heavily bootlegged in the late 1990s and 2000s, pressed in Taiwan and elsewhere with photocopied art and sold into exactly the Western market that could not easily import the originals. A first pressing check for this catalog is therefore also an authenticity check, and it starts with the label: genuine Japanese releases are on Victor Entertainment, with catalog numbers in the VICL sequence for albums, printed on the disc, booklet and obi alike. A disc whose numbers disagree with its packaging has already failed.

The obi strip is the second document. Japanese Victor CDs shipped with printed obi carrying the title, catalog number, price and release date, and first pressings often carry campaign text tied to the broadcast era. Obi can be swapped or reproduced, so judge the paper and print quality under the same suspicion as the booklet: genuine booklets show sharp photographic reproduction and correct Japanese typesetting, while bootlegs soften, misalign colors and sometimes garble track listings into near misses.

The disc itself carries the third layer: Japanese pressings have clean matrix and mastering codes etched in the inner ring consistent with Japanese plants of the era, and the music content should match the documented track lists exactly, including the hidden and bonus material on special editions such as the CD Box. Bootlegs frequently drop a track, misorder the program or substitute the edited versions from Western releases.

Price is a signal, not a proof. A claimed Japanese first pressing of Blue or the CD Box at a fraction of the going rate is almost always one of the era's counterfeits, which survive in huge numbers. Conversely, the three core albums were reprinted legitimately in Japan, so a later Victor pressing with full obi is a perfectly good shelf copy even when it is not a 1998 original; the honest listing says which it is.

Practical routine: photograph the obi front and back, the disc face and inner ring, and the booklet's last page with its publishing credits, and compare all four against a documented copy before paying collector money. For this catalog, five minutes of verification is the difference between a Victor pressing and a souvenir of the bootleg era.
