How can you tell a first printing of Claymore?

Japanese books confess their printing history at the back. Claymore's covers never changed, so the confession is the only proof.

Every Japanese book carries a colophon, the small print block at the back, recording its edition and printing dates in sequence. Collecting Claymore in Japanese is the art of reading that block, because Shueisha made the usual shortcut useless: across twenty-seven volumes and two decades of reprints, the cover art was never redrawn. A 2002 first printing and a modern reprint wear the same painting.

THE THREE TESTS

Colophon · ISBN · obi
The colophon test
Open the back of the book. The colophon lists the first-edition date and each printing after it. A first printing shows the original entry with nothing beneath it: for volume 1, the January 2002 edition that reached shops on 5 January 2002. Any volume, any era: the last page outranks the cover.
The ISBN blocks
The run's ISBNs drift in blocks as Jump Comics numbering moved: the 873 block for the early volumes, 874 through the middle, then 870 from volume 18 (2010) and 880 for the last two (2014). Early colophons also carry the old ten-digit form, volume 1 as 4-08-873220-0. A mismatched block is a reprint's tell.
The unchanged covers
There is no label change to hunt, no Jets-to-Young-Animal renewal as with Berserk. Shueisha kept Yagi's paintings exactly as first printed. That purity is why Claymore first printings hide in plain sight, and why sellers' cover photos alone can never prove one.

THE FINISHING DETAILS

What separates the best copies
The obi
Japanese first printings shipped with a paper advertising band, the obi, most of which were thrown away by first readers. A first printing with its obi intact is the complete object as sold in its year, and the band, unique to each release window, is itself dating evidence.
The English tell
Viz's first editions carry the Shonen Jump Advanced imprint and their own printing lines on the copyright page. The 2015 complete box set is a separate object entirely, later printings in a slipcase with an exclusive booklet, collectible as a set rather than as firsts.
