How can you tell a first printing of Hunter x Hunter?

Check the Japanese colophon's first edition line and keep the launch obi; English copies are proven by the Viz number line ending in 1.

The method is the Jump Comics standard, and this series makes it unusually informative. A Japanese Hunter x Hunter tankobon's colophon page, printed at the back, lists the first edition date and any later impressions with their dates. A first printing carries only the original edition line. Because the series publishes in bursts, those dates cluster, and a run of first edition colophons doubles as a material record of the hiatuses: the multi year gaps between certain volumes are right there in the print data.

Obi strips carry the era's headlines. Launch printings of the return volumes, most famously volume 37 in 2022 after a four year gap and volume 38 in 2024, shipped with obi announcing the serialization's resumption and anime tie ins, and those bands were produced for the moment, not reprinted with later impressions. A first printing with its return campaign obi intact is the complete artifact of a fandom event, and the market prices the pair together.

English verification is mechanical: Viz prints a number line on the copyright page, and the first printing of each volume ends in 1. Viz's release dates trail Japan's, sometimes by years in the early run and closely in the recent one, so an English first printing is a 2005 object for volume 1 and a recent one for the thirties. Later Viz reprints share the covers, so the line, not the look, decides.

Two cautions are specific to this series. First, unfinished series attract mixed sets: a run assembled across years often blends printings volume by volume, which is normal and should be priced as a reading set unless the colophons are documented. Second, the newest volumes' first printings are not rare at release, print runs are sized to enormous demand, so the premium belongs to patience: obi complete, clean copies of the hiatus boundary volumes, held as the series continues.

Ask sellers for the colophon and the obi in the same photograph as the spine. That single habit separates documented first printings from the ordinary churn of one of the best selling manga in the world, where the books are common and the proof is the product.
