How did Kentaro Miura work with assistants?

The standard manga way at first, one master, a small team, long hours, and then something rarer: he spent years deliberately turning assistants into successors.

Like most Japanese manga artists, Miura worked with assistants who handled the labor a single hand cannot finish at monthly scale: backgrounds, mechanical finishes, tones and the repetitive elements of crowd and architecture. Berserk's density made that labor heavier than almost any comparable series, and accounts of the studio describe an exacting workplace where assistants learned his pen technique by reproducing it, panel after panel, until the joins disappeared.

What changed over time was the ambition of the arrangement. Miura spoke in interviews about wanting his assistants to become artists in their own right, and about the studio as a place of training rather than only production. The team's skill became a subject of reader attention in itself, because Berserk's later volumes maintain a single visual voice across work that no one person drew entirely.

The public proof of the system was Duranki in 2019, where the assistants stepped into the credit line as Studio Gaga, drawing a complete series under Miura's direction. That experiment, covered in its own entries in this hub, was Miura testing in public whether his studio could carry a book. It is impossible, after 2021, to read that test as anything but preparation.

After his death the system completed its arc: Studio Gaga draws Berserk, supervised by Kouji Mori. For the Library's records, the working method entry and the continuation entry are two halves of one fact. Miura's method was never only how he held a pen. It was how he built the room that could keep drawing when he could not.
