How did Yakuza 0 save the series?

By being a beginning. Zero is the one game in the series that asks nothing of you, and the West finally showed up.

Yakuza 0 launched in Japan on March 12, 2015 and in the West on January 24, 2017. It is a prequel set in the winter of 1988, at the height of Japan's bubble economy, following a 20-year-old Kiryu and a 24-year-old Majima through a murder-frame conspiracy over one empty lot in Kamurocho.

WHY IT WORKED

The comeback mechanics

The cover sells the formula: two young men, one city, and a number that promises you need nothing else. Over two million copies followed, the best result the series had ever posted in the West's era.
An entry point, labeled as one
Producer Daisuke Sato has said the advantage was hiding in the title: "because it's zero, it's kind of obvious that you don't need any previous knowledge of the series." A decade of numbered sequels had been warning newcomers away; Zero invited them in.
Two protagonists, two cities
Kiryu's Kamurocho and Majima's Sotenbori, the series' first real origin story for its most popular character, and an economy where money literally bursts out of beaten enemies, bubble-era excess as a game mechanic.
The memes did the marketing
Screenshots and clips traveled where advertising never had: Kiryu solemnly managing a real-estate empire, a chicken named Nugget joining the staff, karaoke performances played perfectly straight. Word of mouth carried the game for years, and an August 2018 PC release opened a second audience just as the word peaked.

WHAT IT UNLOCKED

The flood after Zero
2017-2021
Kiwami and Kiwami 2 remade the first two games in the new technology; the 3-4-5 remasters followed; the back catalogue reached PC and Xbox; Judgment launched a new branch. Nearly everything in this archive after 2016 exists because Zero proved the audience was real.
