How do the Shadow Hearts endings work?
Every game in the line ends on a condition, and the sequels keep choosing the darker road.
Spoilers, in full, for all four games. The pattern is set by Koudelka, which ends three ways depending on a single object: lose Koudelka’s pendant and the confrontation with the resurrected Elaine kills the party outright; recover it and win the final battle, and the three watch the sun rise over the ruined mansion; recover it and lose, and James sacrifices himself to destroy Elaine so the others can escape. Reference works treat the series that follows as growing out of Koudelka’s bad ending, and the darkness compounds from there.

The conditions and the canonShadow Hearts: save Alice, or don’t
Alice’s life is forfeit to Atman, the ruling spirit of Yuri’s Graveyard, as the price of saving him. Complete a specific side quest before the final battle and Yuri can fight Atman for her soul: the good ending, in which the two leave together for her family in France. Skip it, and she dies on that journey. Both endings close on the assassination at Sarajevo.
Covenant begins from the bad ending
There is no ambiguity about which road the sequel takes: Covenant opens six months after the first game with Alice dead and buried at Domrémy. Everything Yuri does in 1915 is done in the world where he failed.
Covenant: two doors for Yuri
As the Mistletoe curse completes, Yuri may let it take him, surviving as an amnesiac in Roger Bacon’s care, or choose death and wake on the train where he first met Alice, alive, with the chance to save her this time. The second has been confirmed by the creators as the canon ending. Karin, meanwhile, is thrown back to Tokyo in 1887, takes the name Anne, and becomes the mother of the hero she loved.
From the New World: Shania’s Malice
Shania is infected with Malice by Lady’s kiss. In the bad ending it consumes her. The good ending must be earned: obtain an optional Fusion and take Shania’s powers to their maximum, and she is cleansed, and stays on as Johnny’s partner at the Garland agency.
