How do you start collecting Death Note?

Death Note is one of manga's most finishable collections: start with the twelve volumes and volume 13, How to Read, add Blanc et Noir and Another Note, then choose one repackage format, Black Edition or the all in one, and the anime or film editions you will actually watch.

The core is unusually well defined. Twelve tankobon or their VIZ twins tell the whole story; How to Read documents it; Blanc et Noir monumentalizes its art; Another Note extends it in prose. Those four stops, each with its own page in this shelf, make a complete Death Note collection by any honest definition, and they can be assembled for less than a single trophy item in many other lanes of this library.

Format choice is the second decision, and it is about reading, not scarcity: the standard volumes for the original object, the Black Edition for a handsome reading set, the all in one for the monument. Owning all three is a defensible collector's redundancy because each is a different publishing idea, but a new shelf should pick one and finish the core first.

Japanese versus English is the third: the Japanese tankobon are inexpensive and carry the obi and period print culture, the VIZ editions carry the boom era American market's history and your reading language. Mixed shelves are normal here; many collectors read the VIZ set and shelve the Japanese set, and this series, short and bounded, is one of the few where that doubling stays affordable.

The screen layer rewards selectivity: the anime's Blu-ray sets in their Japanese and Western editions, the 2006 Japanese films as the live action core, and the musical's cast album for the shelf's audio corner. Replica notebooks and other merchandise form a wide tail that this shelf documents selectively; buy the licensed notebook if one calls to you, and know that it is merchandise, not the manga's documentary record.

Condition and authenticity notes are light but real: art book corners on Blanc et Noir, black edge scuffing on the Black Edition as its page warns, obi presence on Japanese early printings, and bootleg notebook goods are common enough that licensed markings matter. Finish the bounded core first; Death Note rewards completion more than almost any series in this library.
