How does Hirohiko Araki work?

Systematically: he has written a book about his method, and the method explains the career, steady production, constant reference and planned reinvention.

Araki is rare among manga artists of his stature for having explained his method in a book. Manga in Theory and Practice, published in Japan in 2015 and in English by Viz in 2017, lays out his approach: the golden path of shonen story structure, character creation through detailed profile sheets covering habits, flaws and contradictions, and the discipline of building every chapter toward a page turning climax.

The visual method is reference driven, as this hub's pose and fashion entries describe. Araki maintains files of photography, fashion imagery, art reproductions and his own travel photographs, and he draws characters, clothes and locations from that archive rather than from generic memory. His studio practice follows the standard Japanese pattern of assistants on production work, while design, story and finished key art remain his, across a career that moved from weekly deadlines to the monthly pace of Ultra Jump with the seinen parts.

Two habits complete the picture. The first is reinvention as policy: the generational structure of JoJo is a working method as much as a story device, letting him discard a setting, cast and style before they can stale, which he has cited as protection against the burnout that ends long series. The second is routine: interviews consistently describe a regular, health conscious daily schedule, the unglamorous engine behind both the output and the running joke about his youthful appearance, which he attributes to ordinary habits and Sendai's air rather than to any Stand.

For younger artists the book and the career teach the same lesson twice. Araki's originality is not the absence of sources, it is the size and honesty of the reference file, and his longevity is not stamina alone, it is a series designed, from part to part, to let its author change.
