How is the Fullmetal Alchemist manga collected?

The manga is complete in 27 tankobon volumes, 9 Vizbig omnibuses, or 18 hardcover Fullmetal Edition volumes, and every format tells the same finished story.

Fullmetal Alchemist is a finished manga: Hiromu Arakawa published 108 chapters plus side stories in Monthly Shonen Gangan between July 2001 and June 2010, and Square Enix collected them into 27 tankobon volumes in Japan. Because the ending was written and drawn by Arakawa herself before either anime finished, every collected edition worldwide contains the same complete story with the same final chapter.

Viz Media published the standard English edition in 27 paperback volumes between 2005 and 2011, matching the Japanese volume breaks and covers. These are the most common Fullmetal Alchemist books in the world, the easiest to find secondhand, and the baseline against which every other edition is measured. Viz also released the series digitally in the same 27 volume structure.

The budget route is the Vizbig line: nine chunky paperback omnibuses, each binding three tankobon volumes, published in English between 2011 and 2014. Vizbig volumes use slightly larger pages and heavier paper than the singles, include color pages and bonus material gathered at the back, and usually cost far less per chapter than buying 27 separate books. The trade off is weight and a glued binding that rewards careful reading.

At the top sits the Fullmetal Edition, covered in its own entry on this site: 18 hardcover volumes based on the Japanese kanzenban complete edition, with larger pages, restored color pages and new cover art by Arakawa. Collectors generally choose between the standard singles for a reading shelf, Vizbig for value, and the Fullmetal Edition as the display set. All three are complete; none is missing story.

Japanese collectors have the same ladder in the original language: 27 tankobon, a bunkoban pocket line, and the 18 volume kanzenban. Japanese volumes keep Arakawa's original cover art, author notes and gag comics exactly as first published, which is why many Western fans buy the Japanese singles as art objects even when they read the story in English.
