How is the Hunter x Hunter manga collected?
Hunter x Hunter is collected the simple way and the hard way at once: simply, because there is only one main edition, the standard tankobon; hardly, because the series is unfinished and its shelf grows in the bursts dictated by Yoshihiro Togashi's health and serialization schedule. Shueisha has issued 38 volumes in Japan as of volume 38 in September 2024, collecting the chapters published in Weekly Shonen Jump since March 1998.
Viz Media publishes the English edition in the same tankobon format and numbering, beginning in 2005, and has kept pace volume for volume with Japan, so an English shelf and a Japanese shelf mirror each other almost exactly, an unusually clean situation for a long running Jump series. There is no English omnibus line and no deluxe hardcover edition, which makes the standard singles the whole game for English collectors.
Japan likewise has no kanzenban for this series, unlike Yu Yu Hakusho. The closest upgrades are Jump's digital color editions and periodic reissues with campaign obi, but the physical flagship remains the same slim tankobon format the series started in. Collectors who want a premium object buy first printings, art books and the magazine issues rather than a deluxe set that does not exist.
The hiatus pattern is printed into the collection's rhythm: volumes arrive after serialization blocks, sometimes years apart, volumes 37 and 38 separated the fandom into long waits in 2022 and 2024 respectively. Later volumes carry Togashi's author notes charting his back pain and working methods, including his discussion of the ending scenarios he has prepared, which makes the tankobon themselves documents of the series' unusual production.
Buying is straightforward and forgiving: match volume numbers, prefer consistent printings for a uniform spine run, and know that every format question in this series reduces to one line: 38 standard volumes and counting, in either language, with the story's Succession Contest arc still unfolding in the magazine ahead of the books.
