How long is Kingdom?

More than 800 chapters and 80 plus volumes since 2006, with the story positioned in the final decade of the unification wars and years of serialization still to run.

Kingdom began in Weekly Young Jump in January 2006 and has run weekly, with short breaks, ever since. By the mid 2020s it had passed 800 chapters and 80 tankobon volumes in Japan, placing it among the longest single story manga by one creator in a weekly magazine.

The story's internal clock gives the length meaning. The manga opens around 245 BC, and the recorded unification of China completes in 221 BC. Hara has covered roughly the first half of that span in two decades of serialization, moving through the Zhao campaigns toward the conquest sequence that the Shiji lays out state by state.

What remains is substantial: the fall of the remaining states, including the great Chu campaign where the historical Li Xin, Shin's model, meets his famous failure and Wang Jian, Ousen in the manga, wins the war's largest victory. Readers expect these arcs to occupy years, and Hara has stated his intent to draw through to unification.

For new readers, the length is best approached by arc. The early volumes move quickly, the Coalition and Gyou campaigns are the long middle epics, and the tankobon format, with its steady three to four volumes a year, makes a catch up project measurable in months of reading rather than weeks.

Length is also the collecting frame. A complete Japanese set is a major shelf commitment in weight and space, which is why arc based buying, and the French and English editions' slower cadences, shape how most overseas readers assemble the series.
