How many volumes of Hunter x Hunter are there?
As of this writing the count is 38. Shueisha released Hunter x Hunter volume 38 in Japan on September 4, 2024, collecting chapters through the Succession Contest arc's voyage phase, and Viz's English edition tracks the Japanese count with its own volume 38 following in English. The series passed 400 chapters in the magazine during its 2024 serialization block, so the tankobon total will keep moving as new chapters are gathered.
The number confuses newcomers because the anime's completeness feels final: the 2011 series adapts through volume 32's material, the 13th Hunter Chairman Election arc, which leads casual listings to describe the manga as if it ended in the low thirties. Volumes 33 to 38, the Dark Continent Expedition and Succession Contest material, are manga only territory, never animated, and they are the volumes anime first fans most often do not know exist.
Chapter math explains the shelf: Togashi's chapters run in Weekly Shonen Jump in blocks between hiatuses, and a tankobon typically gathers about ten chapters. The famous gaps, including the long silence between volume 36 in 2018 and volume 37 in 2022, are visible in any publication date list as multi year jumps, which is why a complete set's colophons read like a diary of the series' production.
Ancillary books do not add volumes: the official guidebook, Hunter's Guide, and the two Yu Yu Hakusho era style databook cousins sit outside the numbering, as do the anime film comics and novelizations. A set advertised above 38 volumes in late 2024 terms is padded with guides or duplicates, the same lot inflation pattern as every Jump series in this Library.
For a buyer, the practical numbers are these: 32 volumes takes you to the anime's ending, 38 takes you to the current frontier, and the difference between those shelves is the entire unanimated Dark Continent saga. State which frontier you are buying before comparing prices between listings.
