How much did THE FIRST SLAM DUNK earn?
THE FIRST SLAM DUNK opened in Japan on December 3, 2022 and refused to leave. Its opening weekend took 1,295,808,780 yen, about $9.50 million at the time, from 847,000 tickets. When the first run finally closed on August 31, 2023, roughly nine months later, it had sold about 10.88 million tickets for 15.73 billion yen, about $107.6 million at the time, and it ranked first at the box office again on its last day of screening.
Worldwide the film reached about $279 million, making it the highest-grossing basketball film ever released and one of the top-grossing Japanese films of all time. In Japan it stood as the 13th highest-earning film in the country's history at the close of the first run, and the highest-earning domestic film of 2023. Revival screenings since have pushed the Japanese total higher still.
The shape of the run is the story: not a front-loaded blockbuster but a word-of-mouth marathon, powered by repeat viewings and a generation of readers who had waited twenty six years. It also won the Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year.
