How to tell a first printing of One Piece volume 1

Check the edition page at the back: a true first printing of volume 1 carries the December 24, 1997 first issue line from Shueisha with no subsequent printing notation, and pairs with the era's original jacket, price, and (when present) its first obi.

One Piece volume 1, Romance Dawn, was published on December 24, 1997, before the anime, before the records, when the series was a promising new serialization and nothing more. Shueisha has kept it in print ever since, so the overwhelming majority of copies in the world are later printings, physically near-identical to a casual glance. The difference lives in the okusuke, the edition page: Japanese publishing prints the first issue date and each later printing's date, and the first printing shows the 1997 line alone.

The jacket supports the reading. First printings carry the period cover price and back-cover design of 1997 Jump Comics, and the obi, the promotional band, when a copy retains it, advertises the new series in terms that predate any anime. Because obi migrate between copies in the used trade, the Library's rule stands: the edition page decides, the obi corroborates, the price follows both.

Market context explains the care. The world's best-selling manga's first volume in first printing is a cornerstone Japanese comics collectible, with graded and high-grade raw copies tracked the way American collectors track key issues, and with a counterfeit and misrepresentation risk to match. Japanese auction listings for verified copies lead with the okusuke photograph for exactly this reason.

Protocol for a buyer: request the edition page photo, the spine in even light, and the back cover; confirm the 1997 first issue line; then judge condition as you would any 1997 paperback that children read, which is to say strictly. A mid-grade verified first printing is a better object than a beautiful copy of uncertain printing, and the price gap between printings is wide enough that the photographs are never an unreasonable ask.
