Is Japanese Harvest Moon worth importing?

Yes for collectors and for the Japan only routes and editions, with eyes open: the social writing is the game, so play imports with translation support, and mind the region locks of the cartridge eras.

The collecting case is easy. Japanese Bokujo Monogatari copies are cheaper at the scarce end, the boxes carry the original pastoral art, the name never splits, and Japan received editions the West waited years for or never got on the original hardware, above all the Girl versions of Back to Nature and the Wonderful Life route on their first systems. For a shelf, importing is not a compromise. It is the primary edition.

The playing case needs honesty about language. Harvest Moon runs on schedules, prices, and systems that read visually, and a determined import player can farm a Japanese copy with a guidebook and a translation app. But the series soul is its writing: villager dialogue, festival scripts, letters, and heart events. Without Japanese, you own the farm and miss the neighbours, which is rather like the opposite of the games own lesson.

Hardware decides the rest. Super Famicom, Nintendo 64, PlayStation, GameCube, and GBA Japanese copies meet region locks or console differences of varying kindness, the GBA and DS are region free and are the friendliest imports, and Switch Bokujo Monogatari releases are region free with many including English, making the modern Japanese editions the easiest dual purpose buys in the series. Check each release language support before assuming, as it varies by title.

The balanced shelf does both: Japanese editions and guides as the archive, in the language the farm was written in, and Western copies of your personal favourites to actually live in. Import for the collection and the exclusives. Play where you can read the town. That division has served Bokujo Monogatari collectors for thirty years, because this series, more than most, is made of words.
