The Kenshin one-shots and side stories

The series was born in one-shots, and its loose ends live in them still.

Jump tested Kenshin twice before serializing him, and Watsuki kept returning to the short form at the story’s edges: a prequel for his villain, a sequel for his student, a samurai tale from before everything. Collected, the one-shots are the archive’s map of what the 28 volumes leave out.

WHERE THE ONE-SHOTS LIVEKanzenban volume 22 (2007), the complete edition's final volume — the book where Yahiko no Sakabatō and Haru ni Sakura, both left out of the tankōbon, were finally collected.

BEFORE THE SERIES

1992 to 1993
Rurouni, first pilot · December 1992
In the Jump Winter Special: an early Kenshin stops a crime lord from taking the Kamiya dojo, a dry run of the Megumi plot. Watsuki counts it as the series’ pilot.
Rurouni, second pilot · April 1993
In the Jump 21–22 double issue: Kenshin aids the wealthy Raikōji Chizuru. Thirty-one pages its author said he put his whole soul into, and later judged harder than he remembered.
Crescent Moon in the Warring States
Watsuki’s debut one-shot, later reprinted inside volume 6: a Warring States tale whose hero is the seed of Hiko Seijūrō.

BESIDE AND AFTER

1999 to 2016
Yahiko no Sakabatō · 1999
A Jump one-shot set after the finale: Yahiko, holding the sakabatō, minds another dojo. Left out of the tankōbon; restored in kanzenban 22 and VIZBIG 9.
Restoration · 2012–13
A Jump Square re-telling drawn to meet the first live-action film, Kenshin re-introduced to a new decade.
Master of Flame · 2014
A one-shot for Shishio: how the burned assassin gathered his Ten Swords.
The Ex-Con Ashitaro · 2016
Two Jump Square chapters that turned out to be the Hokkaido Arc’s prologue in disguise.
