Kenshin in English: the Viz editions
Viz brought Kenshin west in 2003, and reader demand put it on a monthly schedule.
Viz Media released the first English volume on October 7, 2003. The early volumes appeared irregularly; sales and reader letters were strong enough that from volume 7 the series went monthly, a pace almost unheard of for translated manga at the time, and finished with volume 28 on July 5, 2006. The translation kept the honorifics and the historical texture, and printed Watsuki’s own voluminous author’s notes, which remain a primary source for how the series was made.
One naming note for collectors: the manga in English is Rurouni Kenshin, but the anime was long sold in North America as Samurai X, the title the licensor chose abroad. Same swordsman, two spines.
