What are the seasons of the Kingdom anime?
The Kingdom anime premiered in June 2012 on NHK, adapting the manga's early arcs. Studio Pierrot produced it, and the first season became notorious for its extensive use of computer generated soldiers and stiff CG battle movement, a cost saving approach that fans of Hara's dense hand drawn battles found hard to accept.
The production course corrected over time. Season two reduced the CG burden, and from season three onward the series was produced by Pierrot with Studio Signpost, moving to predominantly traditional animation with CG used more sparingly. The visual recovery matched the story's rise into the Coalition Invasion, and the later seasons are generally well regarded.
The anime ran five seasons through 2024, passing 150 episodes in total, covering the story from Shin's first battles through the early Zhao campaigns. A sixth season was announced to follow, continuing into the Gyou campaign material that manga readers rank highest.
Casting is a point of pride for the adaptation. Masakazu Morita voices Shin with the required mix of roughness and warmth, Jun Fukuyama plays Ei Sei, and Rie Kugimiya voices Karyo Ten. The score and the opening themes, which changed by season, are staples of Japanese fan events for the series.
For collectors, the anime matters as a gateway and as merchandise: Japanese Blu ray boxes with Hara drawn jackets, soundtrack albums and the anime's role in pushing the manga past its early sales plateau. The first season's reputation is a collecting footnote, early discs document an experiment the industry itself walked back.
