What is the Gyou campaign in Kingdom?

Qin gambles on capturing Gyou, a Zhao city near its capital, and the campaign becomes a siege, a starvation contest and the huge Shukai Plains battle at once.

The Western Zhao Invasion arc, built around the city of Gyou, is Kingdom's longest single operation. Qin's chief of military affairs, Shou Hei Kun, designs an audacious plan: rather than grinding through Zhao's border fortresses, a combined army will plunge deep into Zhao, seize Gyou near the capital Kantan, and hold it with supplies smuggled in by river.

Riboku answers with a layered defense, and the campaign splits into three connected stories: the siege of Gyou, where the Qin army races its own hunger; the field battle on the Shukai Plains, where Shin, Ouhon and Mouten, the three young commanders of Qin's new generation, face Zhao's best; and a supply war fought by spies, refugees and river fleets far from the front line.

The arc is where Shin's generation comes of age. The Hi Shin Unit fights as a true army, Shin duels the fearsome Houken, the near mythic warrior who killed his mentor Ouki, and the long personal thread of revenge and inheritance that began in the series' first volumes reaches its climax.

Hara also uses the campaign to show war's logistics honestly. Food, not swordplay, is the arc's ticking clock, and chapters dwell on granaries, refugee columns used as weapons, and the arithmetic of feeding an army in enemy country, all drawn from how the Shiji describes Warring States warfare.

The campaign occupies a long run of Japanese volumes in the fifties of the tankobon numbering, and it is the stretch most often recommended as the series' summit. The anime's later seasons were anticipated for years largely because fans wanted to see Shukai Plains animated.
