The Creator of Claymore Is Back With a New Series

Claymore volume 1 Japanese cover
Claymore volume 1, the series that made Norihiro Yagi's name. Official cover art shown.
The short version: Norihiro Yagi, the creator of Claymore, launched a new manga, Bartlet Fairy Basslet, on Shonen Jump+ on Monday, with a 55-page first chapter published in English the same day. Chapter two lands November 8 in English.

Norihiro Yagi has a new series. Bartlet Fairy Basslet opened on Shueisha's Shonen Jump+ service on Monday, November 2, Anime News Network and Siliconera report, and Shueisha's MANGA Plus service published the first chapter in English on the same day. Viz Media's Shonen Jump service carries it in English as well. New chapters run weekly on all three.

MANGA Plus bills it as a hack and slash fantasy epic, and its summary is short: after defeating her nemesis, Knight-Captain and Princess Brunhilde sees a mysterious shining fish fall from the sky. The first chapter runs 55 pages, a full opening statement rather than a teaser. Chapter two follows on November 8 in English, November 9 in Japan.

Yagi's name is the news. Claymore, his dark fantasy about silver-eyed warriors hunting shape-shifting monsters, ran from 2001 to 2014 across 27 volumes, reached North America through Viz Media, and became a 2007 television anime from Madhouse. His follow-up, Ariadne in the Blue Sky, ran from 2017 to 2023 and closed at 22 volumes, which makes Bartlet Fairy Basslet his first new series in three years. A live-action adaptation of Claymore is also in development, so his back catalogue is about to get a second wave of attention from two directions at once.

The Collector Angle

New series from proven creators are where tomorrow's first printings come from. Bartlet Fairy Basslet has no collected volume yet, so the collectible story today is Claymore itself: 27 volumes, a finished and self-contained run, with a new series launching and a live-action adaptation in development. When volume one of Bartlet arrives, its first appearance will trace back to this week's Jump+ debut, and the readers arriving with it will meet Claymore first.
