How should a collector approach Soul Eater?

Pick a manga edition line first, add the two Soul Art books, then choose an anime box by era and region; first printings and new Ohkubo covers are where premiums sit.

Soul Eater is a friendly collecting property: the story is finished, the editions are well defined and most material is affordable. The first decision is the manga line. The Japanese Gangan tankobon and the Yen Press English singles both run 25 volumes with Ohkubo's original covers; the Perfect Edition's 17 larger volumes with new covers are the premium alternative, and mixing lines mid run is the one mistake to avoid.

First printings follow the usual Japanese rules. Early Gangan volumes from 2004 and 2005, printed before the anime lifted the series, are the scarcer paper, identified on the copyright page and worth verifying in photos. English first editions from Yen's early years carry similar modest premiums for complete, uniform sets more than for single volumes.

The art books are the lane's high ground. Soul Art and Soul Art 2, in Japanese or English editions, hold value because they serve readers who never buy a single tankobon, and clean copies with intact jackets and obi where applicable are the standard targets. The NOT! and B. Ichi sets complete the author shelf at low cost and should be bought while they remain easy.

For the anime, Japanese Blu ray boxes collect the Bones series at premium quality, while North American DVD and Blu ray releases from the Funimation era made the series widely owned in the West. The 2008 Japanese games, Monotone Princess above all, are the inexpensive tangible extras, and period merchandise, figures of Maka, Soul and Kid and the laughing sun goods, sorts by manufacturer marks and era licensing lines.

The summary a buyer can use: Soul Eater rewards completeness over rarity. A uniform manga set, both art books, the spin offs and one good anime box make the definitive shelf, and every piece of it is findable with patience at ordinary prices.
