How was Soul Eater serialized?

Three prologue one shots in 2003 tested its three teams; Monthly Shonen Gangan then serialized it from May 2004 to August 2013.

Soul Eater's path to serialization was unusually visible. In 2003 Square Enix published three Soul Eater prologue chapters across its Gangan magazines, each introducing one meister and weapon team: Maka and Soul, Black Star and Tsubaki, and Death the Kid with Liz and Patty. The tryout structure is preserved in the first tankobon, which opens with those prologues before the numbered chapters begin.

Full serialization began in Monthly Shonen Gangan in May 2004. The monthly rhythm gave Ohkubo longer chapters than a weekly series, and he used them for dense, design heavy storytelling: full page cityscapes, elaborate fight staging and chapter covers that work as posters, all of which became the series' signature in print.

The run lasted until August 2013, totaling 117 chapters collected in 25 tankobon volumes. The final arcs, fought on the Moon of its world, closed the Kishin war that had been seeded since the prologues, and Ohkubo ended the series on his own terms rather than extending it, a discipline he repeated with Fire Force.

Alongside the main run, the Gangan family carried the spin off Soul Eater NOT! from 2011, and Square Enix fed the franchise with guidebooks, novels and the Soul Art collections. The magazine context matters to collectors: Gangan covers and color pages featuring Soul Eater are period pieces of the serialization, distinct from the tankobon that most overseas readers know.

Publication history explains the editions that followed. The 25 volume tankobon set is the base text; the later Perfect Edition, larger format with new cover art and color restoration, is Square Enix's own upgrade of its backlist classic, issued once the series had settled into evergreen status.
