Who are the main teams in Soul Eater?
Every Soul Eater team is an argument about partnership. Maka Albarn is a scythe meister raised inside the academy's world, daughter of Lord Death's current Death Scythe, Spirit, and a gifted meister mother she idolizes. Her weapon, Soul Eater Evans, comes from a famous musical family and chose the scythe's uncool life on purpose; their arc is about trust, tested by the black blood that infects Soul early in the story.
Black Star and Tsubaki Nakatsukasa invert the formula. Black Star, last survivor of the Star Clan of assassins, is the loudest character in the series, a self declared star who wants to surpass the gods; Tsubaki, descended from a family of demon weapons, is gentle, patient and uniquely versatile, transforming into a whole arsenal of ninja tools and eventually the enchanted sword mode that anchors their growth.
Death the Kid, Lord Death's son, is a shinigami who wields two weapons because one would break symmetry, his consuming obsession. His partners, sisters Liz and Patty Thompson, are former Brooklyn street criminals who transform into matching pistols; the comedy of the perfect god and the imperfect sisters is also the series' warmest found family story.
The teams are balanced as narrative instruments: Maka and Soul carry the plot's emotional spine, Black Star and Tsubaki carry its shonen ambition theme, and Kid's trio carries its questions about order, the theme the Kishin war turns deadly serious. Supporting teams, including Ox Ford, Kim Diehl and the academy's teachers such as Franken Stein, fill out the school around them.
Design is half the profiling. Ohkubo gives each team a silhouette, a color scheme and a fighting rhythm distinct enough to read in a crowd panel, which is why the trio structure survived from the three prologue one shots all the way to the final volume's cover.
