What is Soul Eater NOT!?
Soul Eater NOT! is a spin off manga by Atsushi Ohkubo, serialized in Monthly Shonen Gangan from 2011 to 2014 and collected in five volumes. Its premise is a perspective flip: the main series follows the EAT class, the elite ten percent training for war, while NOT! follows the NOT class, the ninety percent of students who attend the academy to learn control of their powers and then go live normal lives.
The lead is Tsugumi Harudori, a Japanese girl who discovers she is a weapon, a halberd, and travels to Death City to choose a meister partner. Her candidates, the forgetful Meme Tatane and the proud Anya Hepburn, form the series' central trio, and its stakes are friendship sized: dorm life, part time jobs, exams and first partnerships, with the main series' cast appearing as admired upperclassmen.
Beneath the calm, NOT! is set before and during the main story's early period, and its later volumes weave toward the darkness at the academy's edges, including a traitor storyline that connects to Medusa's network. The contrast is the point: NOT! shows what the Kishin war was fought to protect.
Bones adapted NOT! into a 12 episode anime in 2014, directed by Masakazu Hashimoto, with a softer design approach matching the manga's rounder art. It introduced the spin off to the anime audience the main series had built, and it remains the gentler entry point sometimes recommended for younger viewers.
As a collectible, NOT! is a tidy five volume set in both Japanese and English, with Ohkubo art throughout, and it completes the Soul Eater shelf beside the 25 main volumes. The Library treats it as a companion text, not an appendix: it is the same author's second view of his own world.
