The history of Rurouni Kenshin

Five and a half years in Weekly Shōnen Jump, ended at the top on purpose.

Kenshin existed twice before the series did. Two pilot stories under the title Rurouni: Meiji Swordsman Romantic Story ran in Jump specials in December 1992 and April 1993; Watsuki called the second a side story and put, in his words, all his soul into its 31 pages. The full series began in Weekly Shōnen Jump on April 12, 1994, and ran to September 21, 1999: 255 chapters, which Watsuki calls Acts.

The ending was a decision, not a cancellation. Watsuki had planned a short run at first, then let the cast and the Kyoto arc grow with the reader surveys. When the Jinchū arc closed the story’s questions, he stopped, with his editor Hisashi Sasaki backing the call: end at the peak, respect the readers and the author’s limits. Volume 28 followed on November 4, 1999.

Rurouni Kenshin: Restoration volume 1 English cover
THE RETURNRestoration, volume 1 (Viz, 2013). The Jump Square retelling of 2012–13, drawn alongside the first live-action film, was the first of the returns that followed the 1999 ending.

THE RUN

1992 to 1999
The pilots
Two one-shots in Jump winter and spring specials, 1992 and 1993: the dojo plot and the Chizuru story, testing whether a historical swordsman could hold a shōnen page.
The launch
Serialization from April 12, 1994. A historical series was an editor’s request; Watsuki shaped it on Moeyo Ken and the Sugata Sanshirō tradition of the swordsman’s tale.
The peak
Reader surveys carried the Kyoto arc to a year and a half, and the series stood alongside Dragon Ball, Slam Dunk and YuYu Hakusho in Jump’s strongest decade.

AFTER THE END

The story that kept reopening
Restoration
A short return in Jump Square, 2012 to 2013, drawn alongside the first live-action film.
Master of Flame
A 2014 one-shot telling Shishio’s side of the fire.
The Hokkaido Arc
The true sequel, monthly in Jump Square from September 4, 2017, and still running: documented on its own page in this archive.
