The Tarot Art of X

CLAMP’s most ornate art era, dealt one card at a time from the dust jackets of a manga.

X is where CLAMP's art reached its baroque peak: Mokona's line loaded with jewelry, feathers, stained glass, and blood, all of it arranged like altarpieces. The clearest proof is the series they built into the books themselves. Every original volume carried a tarot illustration, a member of the cast standing as one of the major arcana, printed where only a buyer of the physical book would find it: on the dust-jacket flap.

Kamui, printed with volume 1, stands as The Magician. The set needed nineteen cards in the end, because the nineteenth, The Fool, was published not in a volume but in the first art book, X ZERO.

THE SYSTEM

Arcana as casting
Why tarot
X is a story about fate announced in advance and fought anyway. Dealing each character a fixed arcana card turns the prophecy into a picture the reader can hold: the cast as a spread, the ending supposedly already on the table.
Verified anchors
Kamui as The Magician is documented with the first volume; Inuki, Yuzuriha’s spirit dog, carries Strength in the eighth volume’s card. This page prints only the assignments confirmed in opened sources and declines to invent the rest of the spread.
The Fool problem
Because The Fool lived in an art book, no set of the eighteen volumes alone could ever complete the tarot. For thirty years the nineteenth card was the one that got away, a fitting accident for this series.

THE 2023 RESURRECTION

Nineteen clear cards
The Premium bonus
Kadokawa’s CLAMP Premium Collection of 2023 revived the flap illustrations as a set of nineteen clear tarot cards, offered as the purchase bonus for collecting all nineteen volumes of the new edition, Fool included at last.
The fine print
The offer ran through Japanese channels and, as fan reporting on the campaign noted, required a Japanese address to claim. The cards are therefore already a small collecting story of their own.

THE ART BOOKS

ZERO and INFINITY
X ZERO (2000)
The first Illustrated Collection, 152 pages in hardcover, published 31 March 2000 (ISBN 4-04-853168-9), gathering the color work of the early run, The Fool among it.
X INFINITY (2005)
The second collection followed on 1 December 2005, when the art had visibly changed with the years, slimmer and sharper, so that the two books together document CLAMP’s own style evolving across the hiatus years.
