The 2022 Urusei Yatsura Remake

Forty-one years after the first anime, David Production remade it as a 46-episode selected-chapters adaptation: the original’s 194 episodes distilled to the manga’s highlights.

Announced on January 1, 2022, the new series premiered on October 14, 2022 in Fuji TV’s Noitamina block. It was built as 46 full-length episodes in four cours, split into two seasons: October 2022 to March 2023, and January to June 2024. The production is David Production’s, directed by Takahiro Komei, Hideya Takahashi and Yasuhiro Kimura, with scripts by Yuko Kakihara, character designs by Naoyuki Asano and music by Masaru Yokoyama.

The premise is the inverse of the 1981 series. Where Kitty Films expanded the manga, anime-original regulars, two-story episodes, 194 installments, the remake is a curated fidelity: a selection of manga chapters produced to modern standards, at about a quarter of the original’s length. Sentai Filmworks licensed it for North America and beyond, streaming on HIDIVE.
