Was Cowboy Bebop a manga first?
Cowboy Bebop was not adapted from anything. It was created inside the anime studio Sunrise as an original television production, developed by director Shinichiro Watanabe and his staff, and it premiered in April 1998 with no manga, novel or game behind it. The manga versions came afterward and alongside, drawn by other hands, which reverses the order most fans assume and explains why the manga have never been treated as the story's authority.
The confusion is built into the credits. The series lists its story creator as Hajime Yatate, which sounds like a manga author and is not a person at all: Yatate is the collective pen name Sunrise uses for its in house creative staff, a house signature that has fronted everything from Gundam onward. Bebop's actual authorship is a staff room: Watanabe directing, Keiko Nobumoto writing the series composition, Toshihiro Kawamoto designing characters, Kimitoshi Yamane designing the ships and Yoko Kanno composing.
Anime originals were a Sunrise specialty of the era because they let a studio own the property and design for the screen first. Bebop's structure shows the freedom: episodes were conceived as genre exercises with musical identities before continuity, an approach that would be hard to pitch as a manga adaptation but makes sense as a television production inventing itself week to week.
The manga still matter commercially. Kadokawa's adaptations, running in a shojo magazine while the show aired late at night, pulled a different readership toward the series and kept the property in bookstores. That is the normal division of labor for an anime original: print extends the world, screen defines it. Later franchise entries, the film, the games and the live action series, all answer to the anime, not the page.
So in a collection, the hierarchy is reversed from a manga based series: the anime box sets are the primary texts, the manga are the side documents, and Cowboy Bebop's creator credit is best understood as a studio and a director, not a single mangaka.
