What are Breathing Styles in Demon Slayer?

Breathing Styles are sword techniques derived from one original, Sun Breathing, channelled through controlled breathing that pushes the body past normal limits, and each style is taught as numbered forms with its own visual element.

Breathing Styles are the Demon Slayer Corps' answer to an unfair fight. Demons are stronger, faster and effectively immortal without special weapons, so the Corps trains its swordsmen in Total Concentration Breathing, a discipline that maximises oxygen in the blood and lets a human body move at a demon's pace for the length of a battle. The techniques built on that breathing are the styles, each a school of sword forms with its own lineage and philosophy.

All styles descend from one source. Sun Breathing, the original, was created in the Sengoku era by Yoriichi Tsugikuni, the strongest swordsman in the story's history, and the main branches, Water, Flame, Thunder, Wind and Stone, derive from it, with further styles such as Mist, Serpent, Love, Sound, Insect and Beast branching from those. Tanjiro begins as a Water Breathing student under Urokodaki and carries his family's Hinokami Kagura dance, which the story reveals to be the preserved form of Sun Breathing itself.

The manga draws the styles economically: a named form, a burst of speed lines, and Gotouge's occasional colour pages showing water or flame. The anime made the elements literal and flowing, which is why most fans picture Water Breathing as an actual dragon of water. That visual decision is Ufotable's, and comparing a manga form announcement panel with its animated version is the clearest single illustration of what the adaptation adds.

In the fanbooks and guides the forms are catalogued style by style with their named techniques, making the guide shelf the reference for anyone reconstructing a character's complete move set, since the manga itself never pauses to list them. Collectors of the anime art books will find the effects design for each style documented there as a separate craft from the character design.
