What are Champion Road and the Mashiba vs Kimura OVA?
Champion Road aired as a television special in 2003, produced by Madhouse with the first season's team, and adapts the manga's first defense storyline: Ippo, newly the Japanese featherweight champion, faces Sanada, a medical student boxer who studies the body the way Ippo studies tape, in a chess match of counters and the Dempsey Roll's limits. It is feature length in feel and essential to the anime's continuity, picking up exactly where episode 76 sets it down.
The OVA, released the same year, is the one fans name when they explain what Ippo is really about. Tatsuya Kimura, the gym's clown, Aoki's partner in joke techniques and losing records, finally earns a title shot against Mashiba, the most frightening man in his division, and the OVA gives their preparation and the fight itself the full tragic weight the television series reserved for Ippo. Its Dragonfish Blow, Kimura's one perfected weapon, is the series' emblem of a journeyman's whole career in a single punch.
Together the specials show the franchise's confidence at its peak: a television special for the champion and a video release headlined by a supporting character's doomed glory, sold on the strength of Morikawa's ensemble writing. Japanese releases packaged them in the DVD era's box culture, and Western fans met them first through the Fighting Spirit license's incomplete coverage and later through complete streaming presentations.
For a first watch the placement is precise, after season one and before New Challenger, as the anime seasons page in this shelf lays out. Skipping them leaves holes exactly where the story's heart is: the first defense that proves a champion, and the friend whose ceiling the series refuses to lie about.
As objects, the specials' Japanese DVD releases and their inclusion in later box sets are the forms to collect; the OVA in particular carries the aftermarket affection its reputation predicts, because everyone who has seen it tells the next viewer to find it.
