What are the Attack on Titan Colossal Editions?

Seven giant books that reprint the whole series bigger than Japan ever sold it.

The Colossal Edition is Kodansha USA’s oversized line: seven books at a 7×10.5-inch trim on premium paper, each binding five standard volumes (the seventh binds the final four, 31–34). The line began on 27 May 2014 at $59.99, a hardcover-scale object sold in paperback years, and its first volume made a claim no other edition can: fifteen pages of Isayama’s colour art that have never been published in any other book, not even in Japan.

The line also became a home for strays: the Attack on Avengers crossover story Isayama drew for Marvel in 2014 is reprinted in English inside Colossal Edition 2. For a collector the Colossal books are the display edition: the art at near-artbook scale, the complete series in seven spines, and colour material that exists nowhere else in print. The trade is shelf logic; at this trim they dwarf the Japanese tankōbon they reprint.

THE LINE, IN SHORT

Kodansha USA · 2014 onward
7 books for 34 volumes
Volumes 1–5, 6–10, 11–15, 16–20, 21–25 and 26–30 in five-volume blocks, then 31–34 to finish: the arithmetic collectors check before buying book one.
15 exclusive colour pages
Printed in Colossal Edition 1 and, per Kodansha USA, in no other edition anywhere, including Japan. The single strongest reason this line exists.
Bigger than the original
At 7×10.5 inches the Colossal trim is closer to a Japanese artbook than to the pocket tankōbon. Isayama’s hatching, drawn for a small page, survives the enlargement because it was always dense.
