What are the best Kentaro Miura art books?
The core art book is Berserk Illustrations File, published by Hakusensha in 1997, gathering Miura's color work from Berserk's first decade: magazine covers, promotional paintings and illustrations made for the novels and games of the period. It is a young book about a young series, which is part of its value now, since it documents the color style before the Fantasia era's painterly turn.
Around it sit the hybrid books collectors actually use. The Berserk official guidebook, published in Japanese in 2001 and later in English by Dark Horse, mixes Miura's art with the series' data, and his color covers for all 41 volumes, reprinted cleanly in the various collected editions, form the most complete gallery of his painting in print. Exhibition catalogues from Berserk exhibitions in Japan add large format reproductions and are worth seeking through Japanese sellers.
Because Miura's fame rests on black and white density, the edition question belongs in an art book entry. Dark Horse's Deluxe editions, the oversized hardcovers begun in 2019, print the hatching at a scale the Japanese tankobon cannot, and many readers treat them as the art book of record for the manga itself. The Library's Berserk section compares the Deluxe, tankobon and other editions in detail.
A buying note in the Library's usual form: Japanese Miura illustration books are out of print and counterfeits of popular Berserk items circulate, so check publisher marks, ISBNs and print quality, and be suspicious of any supposed new art book that the publisher's own listings do not show. Verified covers for the books named here belong on the hub's gallery page when sourced.
