What Are the Blade of the Immortal English Editions?

One publisher, one unbroken programme, twenty-seven years of English editions.

Dark Horse Comics has published Blade of the Immortal in English since June 1, 1996, when the first monthly comic issue appeared: before most of the American manga boom, and in a format built for American comic shops. The monthly run lasted eleven years and 131 issues, ending on November 14, 2007, as the last manga Dark Horse still published in the American comic format. The series simply changed containers: trade paperbacks had run alongside since 1997, and they continued alone until the 31st and final volume, Final Curtain, on April 1, 2015.

Two quirks define the English shelf. First, the English volumes do not match the Japanese ones: Dark Horse kept story arcs whole inside each book rather than slicing where the tankobon sliced, so the numbering drifted from the Japanese by as much as a volume, and editor Philip Simon steered the contents back toward alignment from trade volume 21 onward. Second, every format since has kept the 1996 reading arrangement: left to right, panels rearranged rather than flipped, as documented on the arrangement page.

THE LATER FORMATS

Omnibus and deluxe
The omnibuses, 2016 to 2019
Announced in July 2015, the omnibus edition gathered three Dark Horse volumes per book. Ten volumes ran from December 28, 2016, to November 13, 2019: the first time the whole English series could be bought in a uniform set of ten.
The deluxe hardcovers, 2020 to 2023
In March 2020 Dark Horse announced hardcover deluxe editions of the omnibuses, and ten volumes followed from October 2020 to October 18, 2023, at $49.99 each: faux-leather binding, a ribbon bookmark, heavier paper, and, for the first time in English, the original 7 by 10 inch page size of the Japanese serialization.
The digital editions
Digital editions joined the programme in 2015, between the end of the trades and the start of the omnibuses: the quiet format that kept the series in print while the shelf editions turned over.
The companions
The same programme carried the prose novel Legend of the Sword Demon (Dark Horse Books, January 2010) and the art book The Art of Blade of the Immortal (2010), both documented elsewhere in this archive.
