What are the Eight Melodies?
In Mother (1989), the Eight Melodies are the song Maria sang to the infant Giygas, scattered across the world and recovered one fragment at a time: from Mimmie's doll, Laura the canary, the singing monkey at the zoo, the haunted piano of the Rosemary house, the singing cactus of the desert, the dragon beneath Magicant, the robot EVE, and at last George's gravestone. Sung complete to Queen Mary, the melody awakens Giygas's buried memories of the woman who raised him, and his fleet withdraws: the final battle is won by a lullaby.
EarthBound repeats the structure with a different song. Ness carries the Sound Stone, given by the dying Buzz Buzz, and records a fragment at each of the eight Your Sanctuary locations; the completed melody opens his own Magicant, where he faces his nightmare and absorbs the Earth's power. The tune the Stone assembles is heard in full as Smiles and Tears, the ending theme, complete with Itoi's spoken 'I miss you' in the credits.
The mechanic is the series' thesis in system form: progress measured not in levels but in verses, the world's salvation stored in music an ordinary person can carry. Itoi carried the idea one step further in Mother 3, asking composer Shogo Sakai for a Love Theme simple enough to play on piano with one finger, the way the Eight Melodies feel: anyone's song.
Collectors meet the melody everywhere in the archive: as a choral recording by St Paul's Cathedral Choir on the 1989 album, as the bonus demo track on that album's 2004 reissue, and as Suzuki's own closing performance on Mother Music Revisited.
