What are the Hajime no Ippo anime seasons?

There are three television seasons, all from Madhouse: Hajime no Ippo (2000 to 2002, 76 episodes), New Challenger (2009) and Rising (2013 to 2014), plus the Champion Road television special and the Mashiba vs Kimura OVA between the first and second seasons.

The first season, broadcast from October 2000, is the giant: 76 episodes directed at Madhouse with a production commitment that let fights breathe across multiple episodes, covering Ippo's debut through the Japanese featherweight title picture. Its reputation has only grown; it is routinely ranked among the greatest sports anime ever made, and its training montages, sound design of gloves on bags and bodies, and Joe Hisaishi adjacent orchestral scoring by Tsuneo Imahori set the template every later season followed.

Between seasons came the extras: Champion Road (2003), a television special covering Ippo's first title defense era material, and the Mashiba vs Kimura OVA (2003), which gives the gym's comic relief his tragic title shot and is essential viewing, not a side story. Home video releases package these differently by era and region, which is why watch order guides keep being written.

New Challenger (2009) resumed after a six year gap with a leaner 26 episodes, pushing into the Miyata storyline and the world stage buildup, while Rising (2013 to 2014), co-produced with MAPPA, adapted the post title and Kamogawa backstory material, including the coach's wartime flashback arc that fans had waited a decade to see animated.

The anime covers only a fraction of the manga, a structural fact of adapting a series with over a thousand chapters: three seasons and the specials reach roughly the manga's first sixty volumes of story. The anime is therefore a door, not a substitute, and its ending points are beginnings by the manga's measure.

Physical media tells the access story: Japanese DVD and later Blu-ray boxes, the short lived Western DVD release of the first season under the Fighting Spirit title in the 2000s, long out of print, and modern streaming, where Crunchyroll's catalog and Discotek's Blu-ray rescue of the first season in the West changed the series' availability completely. The collecting page in this shelf treats those editions in full.
