What are the Mother clay models?

The series' visual signature was never the sprites. It was clay, made for print, and it survived in a warehouse until 2024.

The enemies and heroes of Mother and EarthBound are known worldwide in a form the games themselves never show: hand-sculpted figures of paper clay, photographed against simple backgrounds. Research by the Mother, She Wrote podcast attributes the figures to sculptor Masao Tottori.

They were work-for-print objects. Hobonichi's own history of the pieces records that the figures were made for the games' official guidebooks, the Mother 2 guidebook of 1994 above all, and for promotional material, at a time when game art in print needed a physical thing to photograph. Nearly every enemy in EarthBound exists as a figure, around 180 in all.

One persistent retelling gets the order wrong: the figures were not sculpted first so sprites could be drawn from them. The documented flow runs from game to guidebook, the clay made to illustrate books about finished games, which makes the figures a publishing artifact, not a development one.

After their 1990s print work the figures went into storage, and there they stayed for three decades, until Hobonichi retrieved them for exhibition: a partial showing at the Secret of MOTHER 2 exhibition in 2024, and the complete set at MOTHER no Katachi in 2025, the first time all of them had ever been publicly displayed.
