What Are the Naruto Uzumaki Chronicles Games?

The Uzumaki Chronicles games are Naruto's PlayStation 2 action-adventure line: two mission-based brawlers (2005 and 2006 in Japan) that traded the Ultimate Ninja series' arena duels for free-roaming missions around the Leaf Village and its countryside.

Developed by Cavia and published by Bandai, the first Uzumaki Chronicles, called Uzumaki Ninden in Japan, strings its story from escort missions, rescues and skirmishes rather than manga arcs, with Naruto running, jumping and fighting through 3D spaces between assignments. It was the franchise's first attempt at a Naruto who lives in a place rather than a fighting stage, and its hub village, modest as the hardware made it, is the direct ancestor of the explorable Leaf in later games.

The sequel, Uzumaki Chronicles 2 (Konoha no Sato no Daikiki in Japan), builds a fuller original plot around a phantom castle and puppet forces threatening the village, with a larger mission structure and more playable support characters. The Western release followed in 2007, in the window when the English anime audience was at its first peak and the PS2 Naruto shelf was filling fastest.

The line's documentation wrinkle is editorial: the Western version of the first game was altered around certain story elements tied to characters the English anime had not yet reached, a localization timing problem typical of the era when the dub trailed the Japanese broadcast by years. Version comparison between the Japanese and Western discs is therefore real content on this shelf, not pedantry.

Uzumaki Chronicles matters to the game record as the fork not taken to its end: the franchise's center of gravity settled on arena fighters and the Storm spectacles, and the roaming action-adventure branch stopped at two. Both games are now period pieces of the PS2 license era, documented here with their Japanese titles, since the two markets named and packaged them differently.
