What are the Rohan stories by Hirohiko Araki?

They are Araki's freedom inside JoJo: short, strange stories about a manga artist who collects experiences, told in any genre Araki pleases.

Kishibe Rohan is the manga artist character introduced in JoJo Part 4, Diamond is Unbreakable, a brilliant, arrogant creator whose Stand, Heaven's Door, lets him read people like books and write commands into them. In 1997 Araki began publishing one shot stories about Rohan's researches, under the title Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan, and he has returned to the character in magazines ever since, making Rohan the longest running spin off inside his own saga.

The format is the attraction. Freed from JoJo's generational structure, a Rohan story can be anything: a horror tale about a haunted house, a comedy about an obsessive exercise routine, a mystery at a French museum, a story about fashion, food or a family curse. Araki has described Rohan as the character through whom he can draw the short stories a saga no longer leaves room for, with himself, a manga artist, refracted through his most difficult creation.

The stories have accumulated into books and beyond. Two collected volumes gather the main one shots in English from Viz, Rohan at the Louvre stands as its own full length volume, and the character has headlined prose novels by other authors, an anime OVA series and a well received live action television adaptation in Japan, which extended into a film. No other JoJo character has carried so many formats.

For collectors the Rohan shelf is the manageable way into Araki first editions and special publications: magazine one shots, the Louvre volume, collaboration stories and exhibition pieces. This hub's Louvre entry covers the most famous single story; the Library's JoJo section places Rohan within Part 4's world.
